"Active Chest Tube Clearance Added to an Enhanced Recovery After Cardiac Surgery (ERAS) Program Improves Outcomes and Reduces Resource Utilization"

Adding PleuraFlow’s Active Chest Tube Clearance (ATC) to an ERAS cardiac surgery program reduced Retained Blood Syndrome by 41%, postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) by 17%, and ICU time by 30% in 684 patients compared to 650 controls, improving outcomes and resource utilization. Prepare Your Hospital for the New Active Mechanical Clearance ICD-10-PCS Codes

CMS has finalized nine ICD-10-PCS procedure codes that enable Active Mechanical Clearance to be identified separately on hospital inpatient claims for applicable discharges beginning
October 01, 2026.

PleuraFlow® ACT® uses Active Mechanical Clearance (AMC)—the distinct active-clearance mechanism reflected in the new ICD-10-PCS codes.

Why Accurate AMC Coding Matters

BUILDING THE DATA FOUNDATION

For the first time, the new AMC-specific ICD-10-PCS codes will allow Active Mechanical Clearance to be identified separately on hospital inpatient claims.

Accurate and consistent coding of applicable cases beginning October 1, 2026—supported by clear clinical documentation—can help establish a reliable claims-data foundation for evaluating AMC utilization, resource use and cost patterns. Over time, these data may support future CMS consideration of whether MS-DRG payment refinement is warranted.

The new codes do not establish an AMC-specific MS-DRG or guarantee additional coverage, payment, or reimbursement.

For Surgeons

Clear documentation that PleuraFlow ACT was used to perform Active Mechanical Clearance helps coding teams determine when the new ICD-10-PCS codes apply and supports accurate AMC claims visibility.

For Hospital Leadership

Early coordination among clinical, coding, CDI, HIM, revenue integrity, and implementation teams supports organizational readiness and helps create consistent, reliable claims data beginning October 1.

For Coding, CDI & HIM Teams

Understanding the new code structure, documentation requirements, body-part and approach selection and common clinical scenarios will support accurate and consistent reporting of AMC on applicable inpatient claims.
