Clear Catheter Systems Announces Publication of Pre-Clinical Data Demonstrating
Improved Drainage with the PleuraFlow® Active Tube Clearance® System
BEND, Oregon – Clear Catheter Systems announced the publication of Pre-Clinical data
in the May, 2010 edition of the Interactive Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Journal.
The study, entitled “Improved drainage with active chest tube clearance”, was
performed at Cleveland Clinicʼs Lerner Research Institute, under the Direction of cardiac
surgery researcher, Dr. Kiyotaka Fukamachi and Dr. Marc Gillinov, staff cardiac surgeon
at Cleveland Clinic and co-inventor of this technology.
The study evaluated the PleuraFlow®, a novel active chest tube clearance system, vs
conventional chest tubes. Chest tubes are routinely used to drain blood and other
matter from the chest cavity after heart surgery.
“Clogging of the chest tube with blood in the setting of continued postoperative drainage
can lead to complications and even death,” says Dr. Kiyotaka Fukamachi. “In the
laboratory we are finding that active chest tube clearance improves drainage and
reduced the degree of retained hemothorax compared to a standard chest tube.”
According to Edward Boyle, CEO of Clear Catheter Systems, “This is the first study to
demonstrate that active chest tube clearance improved drainage compared to a
standard chest tube of the same size.” The company is developing the PleuraFlow®
System, a chest tube that includes a proprietary active tube clearance mechanism for
use after heart and lung surgery.
Said Dr. Gillinov, “This study suggests that an active tube clearance system may provide
clinicians with a better way to safely manage the growing number of patients with a
tendency to bleed when on powerful antiplatelet agents and who need to maintain
functioning chest tubes while their platelets are replaced in the early postoperative
period.”
The company is currently applying for regulatory approval to market this device in North
America and Europe.
